Learn italian through osmosis?

i have already registered for a 2 year course in italy but
its hard for me to learn through study it has to be done through osmosis, gradual unconscious absorption. i don't think i will be able to speak fluently unless i make close italian friends whom i can communicate with on a daily basis, however i still have a year until the beginning of the course and i was wondering of a way in which i can teach myself to speak fairly the italian language before i move.
how could i possibly do that?? i was thinking of translating a couple of novels italian>english and reading them over and over again up until i get a hold of each sentence ?!?!?!!?
P.S im a very shy person thus it would take some time to make new italian friends
please advice me of an alternative way of learning

Answer on Learn italian through osmosis?

ehm...never thought of taking a course in the Italian language? Before you go ahead and try to translate a book, or watch a movie in Italian, you must at least have the basics.

And don't worry, it will be less difficult than you think to learn Italian once you are here: this osmosis thing works...That's how I learned English, when I moved, and I only had the most basic of basics of the language...
